TVA, owned by Quebecor
Media, is the largest private French-language television
network in Quebec, and in Canada. TVA owns the majority
of the stations on its network. TVA also has a 45%
stake in Télé Inter-Rives, which owns two of the
network's affiliates. TVA also owns Le Canal Nouvelles,
Canada's only French-language headline news channel. In
1998, the CRTC allowed TVA to go Canada-wide by making
it compulsory for all cable systems in Canada to carry
at least one TVA station, which is usually CFTM. It is
TVA itself that is in charge of its network signal being
broadcast throughout Canada via satellite. Now that TVA
has gone nationwide, it offers a separate time-shifted
feed for viewers in Western Canada.
The TVA stations outside
of Montreal are essentially semi-satellites of the
network, as they usually carry a continuous signal from
CFTM Montreal, thus airing the most network programming
of any TV network in Canada. This probably explains the
on-air slogan TVA currently uses, which translates to
"television's best". Because it is CFTM that determines
what programs are broadcast on the TVA network, when
CFTM ends up having to interrupt its programming to
carry anything urgent, such as breaking news, the
programming on the whole network usually is interrupted
as well.
