CBC Television
is Canada's largest English-language television network,
serving over 99% of English Canada. Canadian
Television was born when the CBC first went to air in
late 1952. Despite the fact that CBC is owned and
operated by the Government of Canada, it continues to
run advertising. It may be forced to depend more
on commercials for revenue, since the Government has cut
back on the CBC multiple times. So many cutbacks
have been made at CBC that nearly all regional
supper-hour newscasts had to be axed. The only
newscasts of this type that were kept were Northbeat and
Igalaaq in the territories. The latest cutback at
the CBC has resulted in the merging of the master
controls of all CBC owned stations into one single
master control facility in Toronto.
Since CBC
is a network for Canadians, its prime-time schedule is
100% Canadian content. Some American shows are
aired on CBC, such as
The Simpsons, but most of the non-Canadian
programming aired on CBC is international content, with
virtually nothing to do with the U.S.
The owned
and operated stations of the CBC now run roughly the
same schedule. The only differences are
time-shifting due to the time zones, local newscasts,
commercials, and sporadic local programs.
The CBC and
Radio-Canada also run a 24-hour 30-channel digital audio
service known as Galaxie.
